Harmonize Your Nervous System

  Listen On Any Platform

Have you ever had to focus on the horizon to keep from getting seasick?

It works.

Take it from someone who has a super-sensitive stomach.

Our eyes naturally move to find the next similar thing. It's how we move through the world without constantly falling down.

Contrast provides drama but similarity creates a sense of safety, consciously and subconsciously.

With some practice with this technique, you will elevate how you feel constantly welcomed into each space as you move through your home.

In this episode of the In Her Eyes podcast, Interior Designer and color specialist, Lynne Niehaus shares how you can use a simple design strategy that makes adjoining spaces feel cohesive to create harmony in your home.

We have all experienced the "Diderot Effect."

The Diderot Effect states that obtaining a new possession often creates a spiral of consumption which leads you to acquire more new things. As a result, we end up buying things that our previous selves never needed to feel happy or fulfilled.  Read the full explanation here.

For example, you buy a new dress.  Then you suddenly want new earrings, new shoes, and ... A NEW HAIRCUT!

I have seen it hundreds of times in my work with clients.  And it often leads to design burnout because each of the items they desire to update are costly.

A $3000 sofa becomes $5000 with addition of new chairs, $8000 with the flooring, $10,000 with new art, and so on.

Without a definite plan, the purchases can spiral out of the plane of what feels comfortable.  It often leads them to be apprehensive about making changes in adjoining spaces.

The changes they have made loose value because they are surrounded by spaces that now feel less wonderful.   You can master the Diderot Effect by becoming intentional with your purchases (or choosing to see the inherent value in what you have.)

You can trick your brain into believing you have everything you need by using color to direct what your eyes fall on as the move across the landscape of your home.

Learning this trick will do more than save you money.

It will help you enjoy your home in ways that you have always dreamed of.

You will learn:

  • how to tie spaces together yet still preserve their individual integrity and function.
  • how pull dissimilar spaces together
  • what pieces make good transition choices
  • how to keep colorful spaces from feeling isolated from more neutral spaces
  • how to get a "bird's eye view" of your living space to create flow

Your nervous system is both the director and producer in your experience of the story of your life. Creating a home that harmoniously supports its function will give you more peace and joy throughout your days and nights.

Your home should reflect your individuality, inspire you, and propel you forward.

I would love to support in Best Year Ever in 2024.
